When first approaching the freelancer’s lifestyle, some people feel disheartened when they notice just how many talented freelancers populate the freelancing platforms and Facebook groups. They have piled an outstanding number of qualifications and skills and their profiles and portfolios are as professional as they can be. Yes, the competition is high. But this does not mean that you too cannot find your place amongst the talented freelancers and stand out with your own uniqueness.

Let’s examine five important ways you can stand out from the crowd and be noticed by your kindred clients.

Stand out with your profile picture

Experience shows that having a professional-looking and friendly profile picture makes the client stop his attention on your freelancing profile and look into it further. We subconsciously decide who to do business with and the visual impact a profile picture gives has its role in determining if the client can trust you with a project or not. Invest your efforts into creating a good-looking and professional picture that represents you faithfully as an expert in your field, and these will repay you into many potential clients. Here are some tips to keep in mind while creating your profile picture:

  • Keep the focus on your face and try to add a heart-felt smile
  • Have a simple background and avoid any distracting elements
  • Keep your posture upright and your outfit nice and tidy

Stand out with your profile title

When you are writing your profile title, you can underline something special about your skills and character. You want to avoid just stating blandly: “Developer” or “Copywriter”. Try to add a little emotional tweak so the clients will notice your uniqueness. Instead of just stating Copywriter, you may add “Science-backed” or “Persuasive”, in front of it. According to your niche and your strengths and skills, add an adjective that is both emotionally engaging and represents truthfully your abilities. And then attach some words that briefly show your special secret power, for example, if you are an expert in a particular area or field here is the place to showcase it as it will grab the attention of your potential clients that are looking for just that. You may consider adding some special characters to your title so that it looks professional and intriguing.

Here are some examples of good profile titles:

  • Result-driven [Content Creator] Using Ethical Persuasion Techniques
  • Full-Stack Python/Django {Senior Developer}
  • Certified *Personal Trainer & Nutritionist* Expert in Healthy Weight Loss

Stand out with your profile description

The third place the client will look at while considering working with you is your profile description. You can make sure it stands out in the crown by considering some important points. Firstly, you should really focus on the first one or two sentences of your profile description, as it is what the clients will read first, this is your lead-in introduction. Make sure you state straight away from your unique point of strength – and especially how the client will feel while working with you – what are the results that you are there to deliver to them.

Then, describe in detail how you can help your clients in different areas of their business. Avoid describing extensively your qualifications and degrees. Focus on the clients and on their needs and the problems that you can resolve for them so they can earn more money or have a happier life.

In order to attract only good quality clients – make sure you add a sentence or two about what kind of people you would like to do business with and what are your requirements. This way you qualify the clients, and they feel they need to put in some effort and go after you, in order to have the possibility to work with you.

Remember to add a Call to Action to your description so the clients will feel inspired to take the next step by sending you a message.

  • Underline your strengths and uniqueness in the lead-in paragraph
  • Focus on your client and how you fulfill their needs
  • Qualify your clients by stating your clear requirements
  • Add a clear call to action
How to stand out in a sea of freelancers

Stand out with the job proposals you are sending

Some freelancing platforms allow you to apply for jobs by submitting a job proposal. You can skillfully craft your job proposals so you really stand out from the crowd. Here are some ideas on how to do that.

One way to stand out with your job proposal is to record a short video of yourself in response to their project in which you briefly introduce yourself, explain what your plan is in fulfilling the project and invite them to send you a message to discuss the project in detail. Really few people will have the courage to record themselves in this way and it adds so much value and personal touch to record something especially for them. They will also have a chance to know you as a person and trust you better.

But what if recording a video is not within your comfort zone? That is completely fine, and there are other ways you can stand out with your job proposals. One is sending a relevant sample of your work that is very similar to the project you are applying for. This way they will have an actual taste of the final product they will receive, and if they like it – they will for sure continue working with you! If you are just starting, you can even create one just for the project.

Remember to carefully read the job description and highlight how you as an expert can help them in resolving their pain points and fulfill their needs.

  • Record a short video in response to their project
  • Send a relevant sample from your past projects or create one from scratch
  • Read carefully the job description and highlight how you can help them

Starting your career as a freelancer is not easy, especially when there is so much competition. However, by applying these simple principles you can find your way on the freelancing platforms and soon you will find clients you would love to work with! Put in consistent effort in doing a good job with your projects and soon enough you will get many happy clients that will spread the word for you!

Happy freelancing!

Every communication requires two things – the information that is sent, and the feedback that comes from the other side. It’s the same in the freelance world. When we work remotely, we also talk in a remote manner, but can that be of the same effectiveness as working and talking face to face?

Freelancers that have already successfully built their careers know that communication is the key to success, and here we will talk about the importance of feedback for a freelancer.

Why is feedback so important for freelancers?

Let’s say that you have been working with a certain client for a while. Everything went well, until one point. Suddenly, the client stopped responding, assigning new milestones, and being active on a certain freelancing platform.

What’s the first thought that comes to your mind? A freelancer may think that they have said or done something bad, so the client has decided to stop working with them. It also happens that freelancers become worried about the clients that stop responding, especially if they have worked together for a few years. Remote workers may think that something bad has happened to the client.

It’s the same with the feedback. When a freelancer doesn’t receive feedback when the task is done, they will either think that something went wrong, or that the client didn’t have or didn’t want to communicate about a certain problem, so they’ve just left.

What can feedback tell freelancers?

Here, we would like to talk about all those things that feedback can tell a freelancer. Whether good or bad, feedback provides this information:

Skills. Feedback is most often related to skills, representing us whether the freelancer has done a good or bad job. Of course, there are dozens of skills related to freelancing, but most often, feedback is related to those that have been used for a particular task. A freelancer that, let’s say, score a 5 on feedback given may be truly satisfied or gain more confidence to continue with their remote work. When someone receives bad feedback related to skills, they may think about what they can improve, or what went wrong. It also happens that the freelancer may have needed skills, but they just don’t know how to use them for a certain task. Anyways, feedback is important so every freelancer can reflect on the true picture of their skills.

Availability. There’s also a chance to rate someone’s availability, which is of crucial value in remote work. Freelancers who are available when needed definitely higher their chances of being hired by someone new. It’s important to keep in mind that different clients look at different feedback parts. Some will want someone with perfect skills, others will stick with those with fine skills, but constant availability, and so on.

Communication. How did you communicate with your client? How did he or she communicate with you? Was everything clear? Were there some misunderstandings? In the remote world, some feedback doesn’t represent the real picture. Freelancers claim that they often provide 5-star feedback to their clients, even though they are not satisfied with some parts of the project, like communication, yet they don’t want to experience unpleasant situations. Clients sometimes do the same, but they provide great feedback even if they are not completely satisfied if the freelancer is already doing great and have numerous 5-star feedbacks from others.

Meet deadlines and requirements. This is truly important for almost every project. No one wants to be late or to break the deadlines. Some clients appreciate fast work more than skills and correctness, while others are fine with a day, or two deadlines break if the project is perfectly done. Again, everything depends on the personal wishes and needs of a certain client. Feedback can help them to see if you are doing good in those parts they search for.

The need for improvement. Here we come to the point where feedback can help freelancers to realize if there is a need for improvement. If you’re often late, your skills are not rated as you thought they would be, or if your communication skills are not on an expected level, this is a great opportunity to find that out. Don’t think of feedback as of someone’s personal opinion about you. A freelancer should think of feedback as something that will help them grow, improve in the needed fields, and later on – reflect on how far they’ve gone.

Job success score. On many freelancing platforms, feedback can affect job success scores. There are two things that can affect a freelancer’s job success score. One is private feedback, and one is public feedback. We have talked a lot about public feedback already, but what about the one you won’t be able to see? Many freelance professionals claim that private feedback is even more important, or at least – it affects job success scores more. We’ve already mentioned that clients and freelancers often provide great feedback just to escape conflicts, but with private feedback – everyone tells the truth.

So, if you’ve realized that all your public feedbacks are great, but your job success score is dropping, take a look at the recent contracts that have ended. Think about what could go wrong, where did you make a mistake, or what wasn’t perfect. This will help you to grow in needed and wanted ways in your remote career, which will with time definitely improve your profession.

Arguments. Are people arguing online? Nothing new. Yet, in the business world, you have to remind yourself that it’s important to be and stay professional. Never argue about anything that isn’t related to a certain job or a project. Or better said – find a compromise and a solution together with the client.

Disputes. The same goes for disputes. It happens that a client is completely unsatisfied with the job done, yet a freelancer has spent hours working on a project. The dispute involves a third side or better said – a court of a certain freelancing platform. It’s always good to stay calm, neutral, but to provide your evidence. Value your work but cooperate with the client and understand their needs and feelings as well.

Importance of feedback for a freelancer

How can feedback improve the relationship between a client and a freelancer?

Feedbacks go two ways – from a client to a freelancer, and from the freelancer to the client. Feedback can definitely improve remote work relationships because they offer teams to grow together and to show appreciation.

As mentioned, they are always a great way to improve a freelancing career. Most often, if clients are very satisfied with freelancers’ work, they will not only provide feedback but may also write something about freelancers.

Such notes will help other clients find suitable freelancers for their needs, which will bring benefits for both sides – the entire market will expand and connect completely suitable clients and freelancers.

Keeping up good reviews and trying to improve your services all the time will definitely bring more work opportunities. It may happen that a freelancer has a strong portfolio the client likes. A client that is interested in hiring a certain freelancer may dig deeper to check reviews and feedback, and if the client is in doubt between two freelancers, the one with good reviews will probably win the project.

This is especially important on Fiverr, a famous freelance platform, where freelancers don’t provide their own offers, but the clients choose them among many other freelancers. On UpWork, there is a Project Catalog as well, which functions in the similar, or better said – same manner.

It’s important to provide feedback to the client or a freelancer in an honest manner. Only that, the freelance market will have an opportunity to grow in needed and wanted ways.

How to deal with a bad review as a freelancer?

It’s no secret that many freelancers even give up on their remote careers because of a bad review, especially if they have just started building their own careers. The best advice is always to take feedback with grace and class, but you can also ask a client if they would like to change feedback.

For very hard situations, it’s good to know that on some platforms, such as UpWork, top-rated freelancers can request a bad review removal every 3 months. If that’s not the case, you can also give a full refund to your client if the feedback manners to you more than money.

Don’t forget to think of feedback as something positive that can help you pursue your freelancing career! Now, after all, this being said, why wouldn’t you take another look at all the feedback you got from clients, and implement everything we’ve mentioned in this article? Good luck!

One of the most demanding and time and energy-consuming aspects of being a freelancer is being constantly on the lookout for new projects and clients. Constantly make offers on UpWork or wait for a client to contact you on Fiverr is not fun and adds uncertainty and insecurity to the lifestyle of the freelancer. It also scares many people from starting a freelancing career in the first place.

However, many expert freelancers have proven that a solution to this insecurity is the ability to secure long-lasting relationships with your clients. So, let’s examine the ways and skills that are essential to becoming a freelancer your client cannot do without!

Make sure you are sharing the same values

One important aspect before you start investing your energies in a long-term relationship with a client is that you are sharing the same values. Otherwise, it can be just a big struggle, for you and for the client as well.

How to evaluate if you are sharing the same values? You can get the answer intuitively – how do you feel about the client’s business and their goals as a whole? How do you feel supporting this business with your energies and capacity? If you see the client as bringing a valuable contribution to society and you can really back their values, then you are a good match.

This initial evaluation of the company culture and style is crucial in maintaining long-term work chemistry with a particular client!

  • Make sure your client has a business you can support wholeheartedly
  • Make sure you and your client have the same working style and can feel a synergetic effect
  • Ask yourself questions: Is this business honest? Is it valuable to society?

Understand your client in-depth

Freelancers who build lasting relationships with their clients are devoted to understanding well their clients and their businesses. They take the time to do their research and gather as many insights as possible about what the business of the client is all about and how the freelancer’s contribution can make this business thrive.

So, spend some time to know the market and how the business of your client fits in the market. Also, research the new trends and best practices, especially if you are new to freelancing or to working with clients in such an industry. All this knowledge and experiences are not in vain – you can use all of it to encourage ongoing work with the client or promote it on your portfolio – so that you can help similar clients.

When you do your research well, this will enable you to walk the extra mile for them, and leave a contribution that is so valuable, that they have a “wow” moment. This way you will be someone clients are seeking after, and you won’t need to look for new projects anymore!

  • Communicate regularly – via chat, phone, or video-meeting
  • Ask a lot of questions about their goals, challenges, and practices
  • Listen carefully and observe anything that can be relevant to your position and their success
  • Do good research of the company and the industry
  • Know the newest market trends and best practices

Great long-lasting partnerships are built with trust, communication, and constant collaboration.

Building trust and reliability

From the first day you work with a client, never promise more than you can fulfill and always keep your word. People like working with people that are honest and reliable. This is how to build an awesome relationship with just anyone, client, spouse, or friend.

Hit your deadlines or warn in advance if something prevents you from doing so. Set reasonable expectations of your work for the company and do your very best to accomplish them. Be very straightforward in your communication and never try to mislead them in any way.

This will give them a sense of trust and reliability and will work always in your favor!

  • Create reasonable expectations and fulfill them
  • Respect deadlines
  • Communicate openly and honestly

Be proactive

Your clients may be very busy people running different aspects of their business, but they might not be aware of what are the best strategies and practices in your field of expertise. This is the reason why they have come to you for a solution and have handed you a portion of their enterprise they cannot manage themselves!

So, when you fulfill what they have asked you for, be creative and approach them with new ideas and suggestions. When you show them how they can do things better and this improves their income or save them money, you immediately become irreplaceable.

It also shows that you work with passion and a high work ethic, and this will make the client throw more work your way!

  • Make valuable suggestions
  • Show your client ways he can improve his business
  • Come up with ideas that can either save him money or increase his income
  • Invent creative ways to run their processes smoother and better

Always add and show the value you are bringing to the company

When you have already secured a long-term relationship with a client, do not sit and rest on your laurels.

Always keep improving your skills and the value you are bringing your clients and their companies. Make them aware of your valuable contribution and highlight what you are doing and what they are achieving thanks to your efforts – the tangible results and the impact on their business. This will make them see your contribution and don’t take you for granted.

Request their honest evaluation and opinion on things that can be improved in the process, and with every step try to do things better and better. Regularly discuss with them their future projects and how your role will fit in in the future of the company.

The client should really feel you have taken to heart the company’s success and you are doing your best to promote it!

  • Always improve your skills and processes
  • Underline the results and the impact of your work on the company
  • Ask for feedback
  • Discuss future projects and how you can contribute to them

Great long-lasting partnerships are built with trust, communication, and constant collaboration. When a freelancer and a client accomplish that, both can thrive in a stress-free and creative environment, and the quality of work and life improves on both sides.

So be determined to grow with your client, and always improve yourself, your skills, and the way you can make a valuable impact for your clients’ businesses and keep them for a long and productive ride!

Every project management professional knows that the confidence of each member of the team affects the entire team and in the end – its success. Empowering people that work together to become more confident about their roles is a crucial step to increasing productivity. This can also be applied to freelance and remote teams.

According to the Liquidplanner.com, empowering confidence and talents within your team members should be done this way:

1. Make freelance team learn and develop in their own ways and manners.

When a worker doesn’t improve in their field of expertise for quite a while, their confidence starts to drop. It doesn’t matter if we talk about working in the office, or a remote and freelance team that is connected online, it is a must to offer people different access to knowledge, sources, or seminars. Training with knowledge-sharing is a must.

2. Empower workers to take specific tasks.

The truth is that your remote team can probably do certain tasks successfully, yet their low confidence may be stopping freelancers from even trying. Create step-by-step tasks that will higher the confidence of each team member by every baby step they take.

3. Focus on the positive sides.

It’s easy to complain that someone can’t do something, but we won’t achieve much with that attitude. A better idea is to focus on people’s strengths and compliment them when they do something successfully.

4. Always provide support.

Building your entire team emotionally is a great way to embrace confidence within any individual. Carefully listen to their concerns and problems, and help them overcome the difficulties and stay motivated.

5. Making mistakes is – OK.

Team members shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes as well. Make it clear that it’s normal for everyone to make a mistake from time to time. Encourage them to move on and learn from that mistake.

Overall, it’s all about providing support, reminding members of your team how much they can and how much they already know. Most often, just a little “push” is needed…

1. You should never give promises that you can’t keep

Your dream is slowly becoming a reality. You got your first gig. And that is great. But one of the biggest mistakes that first-time freelancers do is giving promises that they just can’t keep.

You should first see how fast you can produce the final product for your client. Then you should see if the quality of your work is on par or better than other freelancers. And the best way to do that is by getting a sample gig from the employer. You should always first show them your skill and what you can do. Especially if you are new in the freelance business sphere. Also, you need to be clear about what your employer expects from you.

2. Do the proper research and take your time

Another big mistake that many freelancers make is taking task without doing the proper research. That is one of the most common complaints by the employers next to the jobs that are not completed on time. Before every job that you take you need to ask yourself. “Can I do the proper research and am I knowledgeable enough to finish the task that is given to me?” Then if you are sure that you can do it, the first thing you should do is to do the proper research on a given subject. That way you will be sure that you give your all.

3.Use freelance tools and apps that can help you do your job more efficient

Nowadays, you can find hundreds and hundreds of desktop applications that can help you with finishing your work. Some of them have free versions like Grammarly. Which is a really useful app, and every freelancer should use it. Even I use it. You should never think that you are capable of finishing every single job without a single mistake. Sooner or later, you will make a mistake. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Explore some resources that can help you. And with this, we are entering the domain of the next point. So, let’s keep going.

4. Check your work before sending it to your employer

Checking your work before delivering it to your employer is the last and most important thing you need to do. Everything might seem good and dandy on a firsthand, but believe me, when you go over your work two or three times, you will find a lot of mistakes that you didn’t notice at the first fly. So be sure that you are always checking your work thought and thought.

5. Don’t overwork yourself

Getting your first freelancing gig is exciting and motivating. Some are ready to give their all, even little too much. Overworking can be really detrimental to your freelancing career. As overworking can make you more prone to making more and more mistakes as time passes by. Give yourself at least two to three breaks during your working hours so you are 100% focused on the task in front of you during your work time. Learning to manage your time can help you not overload yourself with work.

Your freelance future is in your hands

And those are the 5 most important tips that every new freelancer should follow. At the start of your career, everything is in your hands. How you will present yourself to the potential employer. What kind of work ethic will you follow? And if you will do your best every single time.

And that would be all. Did we get something wrong? Do you think we missed something? If you think so, then leave the comment and tell us what you think. Until the next time.

When freelancers are entering the jungle of freelancing, they often feel lost. They see freelancers charging 100$ per hour and freelancers charging 5$ per hour for the same services. At the first glance, this disparity can be disheartening and confusing. But let us consider some essential factors that will bring clarity to the subject of pricing freelance services.

Do your research

Do research among freelancers in your country that make a good living providing the service that you want to offer. How do they manage their expenses and rates? You will find people similar to you in Facebook groups or freelancer hubs of professionals providing services like yours. This way you will get a rough idea of the bid range you can request from your potential clients if you want to sustain yourself with freelancing only.

How to start

If you are new to freelancing and you are just starting with the service you want to provide, you want to start on the lower end of the price range, in order to gain experience and feedback on your job. Once you feel confident and you have some happy clients that can provide you with good testimonials and referrals, you can start increasing your price rate and start charging more for your work.

Set clear goals from the beginning

It is good to set a goal from the beginning. What is the per-hour rate that you want to receive in order to provide for your expenses so that you can have a decent life? It is good to calculate your bills, accounting expenses, taxes, and professional subscriptions. Consider also your other expenses for health insurance, family care, savings, and funds for the days you will be on vacation or on sick leave. When you have all these figures black on white, this will give you a clear vision of your financial situation and how much money you will need to derive from your professional services. Make a calculation of how many hours you need to work per day – and the rate you need to request for your services.

Freelancing Services Calculator

A great tool you can use for calculating your current costs and establishing your hourly rate is the Payoneer Hourly Rate Calculator created by Payoneer. There you can add your current income and expenses, and also the percent by which you want to increase your earnings. This calculator considers operation and communication costs, vacations and sick days, and also how many weeks you want to work in a year. In the end, you get an estimation of the average price per hour you might consider charging your clients. It could be very helpful if you are just starting in the world of freelancing.

Upgrade constantly your skills and profile

In order to attract clients that are willing to pay higher fees, you may want to continuously upgrade your skills and abilities. Make sure you list all relevant projects you complete in your portfolio. Also, you want to make sure that all aspects of your freelance profile look professional and the job proposals you are sending are skilfully explaining the value you can provide. Experience shows that a great profile picture and a persuasive job offer are crucial to winning the desired freelancing project. So have all these aspects in check and you are certain to start attracting the clients you need to skyrocket your freelance career!

How to determine the price for freelance services

It Is Not About The Price, It Is All About The Value

Some freelancers fear to request a fair rate for their services. This may be due to many social factors. They might be scared that requesting a higher fee might scare the clients. However, this is very far from the truth. It is true that your bid range is a factor your client will consider while estimating whether to hire you or not. But it is important to remember that what you are providing your client is a service that brings value to his business or life. So never under-price yourself!

Do Not Set Your Rates Low Expecting To Get More Jobs

Good quality clients are actually willing to pay higher rates if they are sure they will achieve the desired results from the project. They do not want to lose their time and money with cheap people that do a poor job. This is why quality clients often select freelancers that are charging higher rates, but they are experts in their field, and they are sure to receive excellent service.

HIGHLIGHT THE VALUE THE CLIENT IS GETTING

This is why you need to keep in mind the value that you are bringing to your client and to highlight this to them when you are making your offer. At the very start of your career, you do not have the experience and reputation to charge high fees. But once you get established on the platform – make sure to know your value well and start increasing your rate according to the goals you have set.

DO NOT CHARGE ALL YOUR CLIENTS THE SAME RATES

Not all clients you will encounter in your freelancing career will be the same. Some startups, for example, have a limited budget. Working with them can be uncertain as they are not established on the market, and they do not have a steady stream of income. You may decide to help them and charge them a rate that they can afford.

However, when you work with a multinational well-known company that is already steady on the market, you can comfortably ask them a higher fee and they will be willing to provide for your expenses, as long as they get their required service and outcome. So, before you start working with a client or company, do your research beforehand and adjust your rates based on your research!

PER HOUR AND FIXED PRICE

In the freelancing world, projects can be priced per hour or by fixed price. Some freelancers prefer per hour pricing because it is easier for them, and they have the guarantee that each hour worked will be an hour paid. This is very good if you are a beginner in freelancing and you want to explore the market and your industry.

However, experienced freelancers prefer working per project. This way they focus on the value the completion of the project will bring to their client and not on the hours that they need to create it. In fact, you can offer a project and charge for it thousands of dollars, if you are sure it will make or save tens of thousands of dollars to your client! You can complete it in just one or two hours, this is not important to your client. What matters is the result or outcome you are providing!

Remember, your services are making or saving money for your client. So, consider the solution you are providing from the client’s perspective and value your work accordingly!

Tips on establishing your price:

  • Do research among other professionals in your industry
  • Do a calculation of your expenses and needs
  • Set clear goals of your rates
  • Start on the lower range and gradually increase
  • Use an online calculator as a reference
  • Research your client and their business beforehand
  • Keep in mind the value you are providing

What to avoid:

  • Setting a low rate for your service can turn off good potential clients
  • Charge all clients the same rates

On freelancing platforms, where clients and freelancers gather to do business together, good communication is essential for creating good professional relationships between them. Clients usually publish a job description that becomes visible to the freelancers in their profile feed, according to their industry. Then freelancers can send the client a written proposal or offer that illustrates their skills and talents in relation to the job that needs to be done.

When the client examines the candidates for a position, they usually make a pre-selection based on the profile picture and the bid range. Employers usually hire people that look trustworthy and that have a bid range within their budget!

After this initial sifting, they read carefully your offer. It has been established that writing a good offer is crucial in retaining the attention of your potential clients and getting hired eventually.

So, as this skill is so important in your freelancing career, let’s see together how you can master the skill of writing good job proposals.

It is not all about you!

Many freelancers make the mistake that all they need to do is to highlight their talents, skills, qualifications and personality. This is a huge mistake and often turns clients off because they are not looking for somebody who knows how to brag about how great they are, but someone who can show them in practical ways how to accomplish the goal of their project.

So put the focus on the client and on his project and needs. It is not all about you, it is all about your client and the solution that you can provide. If you keep this single thing in mind, you already have the right mindset of writing a great proposal.

When a client wants to hire a freelancer, he is not interested in his many qualifications and degrees, but he is looking for proofs that he can do a good job!

Read carefully the freelance job description and grab the relevant details

Make sure you carefully read the description of the job you apply for. This will give you an insight into the needs of the client and whether you are fit for the position.

It is very annoying to the client to read proposals that feel like standardized templates and that do not mention anything that is stated in the job post.

This does not mean you should not use templates, on the contrary. You can experiment with templates that are proven to work well on the freelance market but make sure you adapt them every single time to the job and to your skills.

So, send a proposal that is relevant to the job description by stating in your own words the needs, goals, and ideas expressed by the client. If something is not clear in the description, ask questions, this will show the client that you really care! Making sure you understand the job to be done is the first and very important step in establishing you as a competent and reliable candidate.

How to write a good offer cover letter

Position yourself as a freelancing expert

1.   Show how you can fulfil the project goal

When you start your proposal, highlight first your client’s need and what you picked up from the job description, and then explain clearly and concisely how you can fulfil this need in the best way possible. Avoid the temptation to start bragging about your talents and skills if they are not relevant to the job.

2.   Teach your client something valuable

Instead of enumerating your university degrees and qualifications, teach the client something valuable that is inherent to his needs and project. This might be a sentence or just a small detail. You can draw it from your experience or from the good research you make. It will not cost you a big effort, but it will make a big difference because you start giving something to the client, even before you get the job. This will show him your deep interest in the project, increase the rapport between you and the client, and increase your probability of getting hired.

3.   Show your plan

The client will hire you if you are qualified in doing what is the job’s goal, and the best way to show this is by outlining a clear and specific plan. How do you aim to fulfil the project? Include the steps needed to accomplish the goal and your vision on each step. This will show the client that you have a strategy and experience with similar projects.

Also, describe the expected outcome, but be careful not to exaggerate or create unreasonable expectations. You will have to prove your words afterward!

Show that you are fit for the freelance project!

The best way to grab the attention of your potential clients is by sending a relevant sample of a job that is similar to what they require. This way you do not only tell them you are good at doing something. You show them!

This method has proven to work wonders for professionals that are new on a freelancing platform and want to build their reputation there. Maybe your profile does not have a rich working history or many reviews. When you send your client a sample of a successfully completed project of yours, this will guarantee that you can do this and set a basis for what they can expect from you.

What if you are a complete beginner in freelancing?

What if you are completely new to freelancing and you do not have samples? If you do not have a portfolio – you can choose to create a portfolio item similar, but not identical to the job requirements. This will help you gain some experience and confidence. If the client hires you after viewing the sample you created, you can be sure he likes your style of working. You can replicate what you did for the creation of the portfolio item following the job requirements, and you can be sure it will work well!

When you are sending your sample make sure you single out how it illustrates your skills that are relevant to the position you apply for.

State your bid clearly

If the job offer does not include a per-hour or fixed-price budget, make sure you state clearly how much will the pricing of the project be. This will bring clarity to the working relationship and avoid bad surprises for you or your client.

Select a reasonable timeframe

Assess your availability and make sure to put a time frame within which the project is going to be completed. If the job offer includes an indication of the time-frame requirements acknowledge that you have read it and that you have the intention of keeping it.

Attention to your spelling and tone!

Be careful you do a good job in your proposal in terms of spelling and grammar. Use a tone that is neither too formal nor too casual. Stay away from underrating other candidates or making funny observations. This will not bring value to your client and to his project. On the contrary, it could turn them off from collaborating with you! Not everybody has the same sense of humour, so keep a polite and professional tone of writing, getting straight to the point and being as concise as possible. While you steer clear from bad language and grammar, you can experiment with phrases and words that have proven to work for other freelancers, and adapt them for your proposal and situation.

Now that you have all these valuable tips on writing a great proposal, set a goal to yourself – how many proposals do you want to write per day? Some freelancers that are at the beginning of their career have seen that writing 5 proposals per day and keeping track of the response rate makes them gain experience at the acquisition of new clients and help them become well-established on the freelancing platform very quickly.

Useful tips

Tips for making a great proposal:

  • Focus on the client and his needs
  • Read carefully the job description
  • Re-state his biggest needs in your own words
  • Ask questions
  • Describe your skills in fulfilling the project
  • Teach the client something small but valuable
  • Outline your strategy
  • Attach a relevant sample
  • State your bid clearly
  • State a reasonable time-frame
  • Use good grammar and spelling
  • Keep your tone polite and professional
  • Set a clear goal on how many proposals per day to write so that you can have a consistent workload.

What to avoid in writing a proposal

  • Focus too much on yourself or on irrelevant details
  • Apply to a job without carefully examining the job description
  • Sending template, standard replies that do not mention details relevant to the job
  • Setting unreasonable expectations you cannot fulfil
  • Setting an unreasonable timeframe or price
  • Using inappropriate jokes or comments
  • Spelling or grammar mistakes

What is your experience?

Do not hesitate to share in the comments what is your experience with writing proposals on freelancing websites!

Having a great profile picture is one of the strongest tools you can use as a freelance professional. It immediately puts you in the front rows and ensures you grab the attention of your potential clients.

In freelancing a great first impression is everything. Your clients often have to choose among myriads of freelancer profiles. A profile picture that stands out increases dramatically your probability of getting the attention of the right clients that want to pay for the time and services of a professional-looking person like you.

So you want to really make sure your picture portrays yourself as a professional businessperson – someone who is reliable, trustworthy and inspires confidence.

Let’s examine together some practical details. We will focus on three main categories: (1) your face and facial expression, (2) your clothing and (3) the background of your profile picture.

When you apply these easy tweaks, your clients will immediately recognize you as somebody they want to do business with!

Facial expression and posture of a freelancer, that inspires trust, respect and friendliness

When a client is scrolling among the pages and pages of potential freelancers to hire, the first thing that pops up to them is your face. And the expression of it. So who is looking at them from your profile?

1.   Your face is the main focus

Your face should be the main focus of the picture. The image must contain your head and your upper torso. Some freelancers choose to show their hands as well, featuring a photo that is from the waist up, but we do not recommend that. Your face should be at the centre of the photo. If you showcase a full body picture of yourself, you risk losing the client’s attention in too many details.

Tip for those who have fear of being photographed:

Some people find it frightful to have their picture taken. The reasons may be many. So, it may seem tempting to them to use a fake photo taken from a stock-image website. Others choose to make a drawing or a caricature of themselves. However, this is not a good way to go. Many freelancing platforms have strict requirements on the profile image and you should make sure you comply 100% with them. Otherwise, you may be penalized or you may lose credibility on the platform. So you should really put in some effort to overcome your fears of being photographed and work on your own profile picture. This will help you in your freelancing career and in your life in general! So take courage and shoot that pic!

2.   Show your face clearly, avoiding distractions

When you show your features clearly and openly, this conveys the ideas that you are not hiding anything and people can trust you. You should make sure you are facing the camera frontally and there are no shadows or shades on your face. If you are a lady, you should make sure your hairstyle does not cover your features and they are clearly visible. And, ladies, no heavy make up! For the gentlemen, being evenly shaven is a great way to convey trustworthiness and reliability. If you cannot shave for cultural or personal reasons, make sure your beard is styled and orderly.

Keep in mind the formula that simplicity and clarity is best if your purpose is to convey professionalism!

TIP:  Experience shows that photos taken in the bright daylight work better than photographs taken with artificial lighting.

3.   Welcome the clients with a smile

And now comes to your smile! You want to make sure you welcome the clients to your page and not scare them away!  Make sure you wear a friendly, natural smiling expression.

If it is hard for you, you can work on it and take more pictures as a rehearsal. You may consider different variations – a mouth smile or a teeth smile, whichever works best for you. The most important is to look natural. A fake smile won’t do. It may look like a grin and may have the opposite effect.

A grumpy, sad expression is even worse, as it can scare potential clients from your page right away! If you look miserable no one will want to hire you!

So make sure you put your clients in a good mood by thinking positive thoughts and reflecting them into your natural, genuine smile in your profile picture!

4.   Practice your royal posture!

Your posture also matters! You should not be hunched forward or leaning frightfully away from the camera! This will create a weird angle that will not look great in pictures.

So, sit upright, have your shoulders straight and slightly down and backwards. Lean towards the camera. Tilt your forehead slightly forward and put your chin slightly down.

Make sure your posture is dignified – it is a token of the respect you show to yourself and to your potential clients.

TIP: If you have a hard time keeping a good posture, make an effort and imagine you are balancing an object on your head, like a big crown for example!

Facial expression and posture tips – in a nutshell:

  • Your face is the focus
  • Face the camera frontally
  • Take your photo in the bright daylight
  • Put on a natural, friendly smile
  • A dignified, upright posture of the shoulders

What to avoid:

  • Taking the photo during the night with artificial light
  • A fake picture or a drawing/caricature of yourself
  • A full-sized body picture
  • Hair on your face
  • Wearing heavy makeup
  • A beard
  • Shadows and shades on your face
  • A slouched posture

Your freelancer attire – professional, but not too formal

When choosing a photo for your profile, you should look professional. Imagine an office person doing your job – and how they show up in a working situation. How would you dress should you have to meet your clients live? You won’t go in your pyjamas or in a casual outfit.

Your clothing must be relevant to your profession. On the other hand, as a freelancer, you are working online from home most of the time. So do not opt for a too formal and rigid outfit, that may seem unnatural and fake. Go for a decent, professional look, but don’t overdo it.

Choose a simple, professional clothing

Here again, simplicity works best. Your attire should show the respect you owe to yourself and to people working with you. If you are a lady, you should avoid anything that is too revealing or distracting. You can choose a nice, professional-looking shirt or blouse. Avoid excessive jewellery or any big accessories. You are selling your professional skills, and not getting the attention to your body.

If you are a guy, a good shirt will work well, you can skip the tie because it will give the picture a too formal impression. When choosing your clothes for the profile picture, solid colours have proven to be better than patterns.

Tips on your clothing:

  • Simple
  • Decent looking
  • Clothing with solid colours works better
  • An attire relevant to your profession

 What to avoid:

  • Sunglasses or distracting accessories
  • Clothes with patterns or shiny details
  • Too formal gown, suit
  • Party or sportswear

Your background – not too distracting, nor too bland

You should avoid a completely white background as it may resemble a passport photo, which is too bland. You want a personal touch. On the other hand, you should avoid a background filled with too many distracting details.

Choose a simple background where you naturally stand out. It can be an office or a photo studio. Experience shows that indoor photos work better than outdoor images. If you go for an outdoor photo, make sure you blur the background, or just make sure it is not too chaotic.

You can choose your surroundings with a contrasting colour from your outfit and hair so that you can stand out in the picture. Otherwise you get lost in the background.

Tips on the best background:

  • Simple interior details – office or studio
  • Indoor works better
  • Contrasting colours from clothes and hair

 What to avoid:

  • White or mono-coloured background
  • Other people in the background
  • Messy room
  • Outdoor scenery, unless blurred
  • Colors that are too similar to your outfit and hair

Get a second opinion

If you are not sure if a photo will work well, you can ask! Ask an honest, unbiased person to tell you if a photo is good for your freelancer profile. You can ask other freelancers like you or a professional business photographer. You can find them in online communities or hubs.

There is another effective way to check if your profile image reflects well the trustworthiness and competency of your profession. It is an online tool called Photofeeler. On their website, you can upload an image and get an opinion expressed in percents on how others feel about your picture. It has three criteria for business pictures: influential, likeable and competent. And based on the average number of votes, you can assess if a picture could work or not for your purpose.

A final touch…

The resolution

Last but not the least, you should never underestimate the resolution of your photo! Never use a low-quality photo. Make sure the photo has a good resolution and it is not pixelized. If you are about to take a new photo, make sure you select the highest resolution for a great, crisp and clear image.

Do you already have a good picture, but you have it in bad resolution? Make sure you increase the resolution before uploading it to your freelancer profile. Every freelancer website has requirements on the profile picture size. You can ask a friend that is well-versed in Photoshop to help you, or you can use an online guide to do it yourself.

How to choose a good image for a freelance portfolio

Arrange your photo session!

If you do not already have a picture of yourself with all the good characteristics above, do not hesitate to arrange a photo session for your profile image! Have someone take a picture of you or set up a tripod and learn the basics on how to take a good photography self-portrait. Take many photos in different locations so you will have a vast array of photos to choose from, and make sure you select the best one!

Now you are equipped with all the knowledge and tools that will help you create a profile picture that conveys an aura of credibility and authority. Having such a high-quality and dignified profile image is an asset that adds up to your presence on the freelancing platform. Your clients will actually be eager to pay higher fees because you give them the impression of someone who can do a good job because you already did a good job with your profile picture. It inspires their professionalism. So, don’t wait any further! Go and put this knowledge into practice and create this great image of yourself that will ensure the best first impression with your clients and many new job opportunities to come!

The next step for your freelancing success

Besides having a good profile image, one of the most relevant things to a client when hiring a freelancer is their offer or cover letter. Here you can learn the best practices and principles in creating an offer that sounds irresistible to a client!

This can be a handy tool for those just starting a freelance career.

Innovative technologies and new ways of doing business have influenced the increase in the number of people working from home. The COVID-19 pandemic has further contributed to the rise in this number. Some people liked this way of working and would like to try becoming full-time freelancers. A freelance career requires many decisions: which niche to choose, how to find a job, how to gain regular clients, and more. One decision that must be made at the very beginning is how and how much to charge for your services.

This decision requires consideration of several factors:

– How much money do you need each month for your lifestyle,
– How much money do you want to earn more than your current earnings,
– How much do other freelancers charge for the same service you want to provide,
– What will be the costs associated with freelance work,
– How much of your time can you dedicate to freelance work, etc.

Fixed price or hourly rate

Most freelancers charge for their services in one (or both) of two ways: a fixed price or an hourly rate. A fixed price is generally a price per project or a gig price (price for a predefined service). In both cases, you know how much time and effort you will need to complete the project or the ordered gig so that you can calculate the price. When you determine the price per hour, you do not know what kind of project you will be hired for or how long it will last, so this decision is not simple.

To help freelancers make this decision, Payoneer created a freelance hourly rate calculator. Freelancers are asked to fill in certain fields to get the recommended price. The final price may not be the one you will use, but this can be a handy tool for those just starting a freelance career.

Freelance hourly rate calculator

When you start the calculator, it is necessary to enter the desired currency, the amount of current annual earnings after deduction of expenses, and what percentage you would want to increase your earnings.

In the next step, you need to decide how many total billing hours you will have during the year. You need to fill in the following information: how many weeks during the year you will work, how many days during the week, and how many hours during the day. The time when you are not working will be deducted from that number of hours: during public and religious holidays, vacations, or when you are ill. All this is approximate data because no one can say with certainty exactly how much they will work, how much time they will spend on vacation, and whether and how much they will be sick.

Annual operating costs are the next step. You need to fill in the fields about your marketing, bookkeeping, office rental, and transportation costs to work. Enter slightly higher amounts than expected because there are always unforeseen costs.

In the fourth step, you fill in the data on additional costs: equipment (computer, furniture), insurance (health, life insurance), communications (telephone, internet), and subscription (software, internet services). As in the previous step, enter slightly higher amounts due to unforeseen costs.

It is necessary to enter your personal data and information about whether you have international clients in the last step. If you have international clients, you will be offered to choose the amount of your current freelance monthly income (less than $ 5,000, $ 5,000 – $ 9,999, $ 10,000 – $ 19,999, etc.).

Conclusion

Although this method does not cover all the relevant factors, it can help beginners to make an easier decision about how much to charge for their services per hour. Therefore, this calculator should not be understood as a definitive recommendation but as an aid in the decision making process. Creating the final price will make the process easier for many.

“If you want success, be unique.”

When it came to freelancing as a writer, I thought I could attempt any type of content, as I ‘love’ writing. I was wrong, although writing is one of the jobs in demand. Most of the times when I got an interview, I could not satisfy the interviewer. I figured out that although I love writing, my area of expertise was not clear to my clients, which is why I was losing opportunities. I realized that mental health is the best thing I can endeavor to compose on because that is the field I have been exploring for 10 years now.

Before long, I updated my profile with the niche as mental health, and the game started changing. I got interviews, and this time, I cracked them. I understood the nuances of the work and in about a month’s time, I had different ventures close by.

How Finding A Niche Helped My Freelancing Business

1.    I was more focused

My niche helped me to focus more on the quality of work. I started taking fewer projects and dedicated myself fully on researching and creating the best I can. I deliberately took care of each detail and utilized my past research materials when I could.
My niche also directed me to the best-matched jobs. Thereafter, I sent out proposals only to the jobs relevant to my area of study and could optimize the limited number of connects that I got from Upwork every month.

2.    I earned more in less time

One of the biggest advantages of ruling out niche was that I started earning more by giving less time. I took around 2-3 ventures for each month that paid off well and disseminated my working hours equitably. I did not have to struggle with allotting time for understanding what the job is all about. Since I was already specialized in the field, I could delve into research and content creation right away. It spared me a ton of time and furthermore cleared a path for taking up more offers. I began offering for long-haul extends that advanced my monetary profits and in the meantime expanded my reliability to existing clients.

3.    My profile got visibility

Ever since I started taking up assignments in my niche, my profile visibility has been increasing organically. I receive more invitations and interviews that I did before and I can prepare myself better for facing recruiters.
With the niche, I could complete my jobs successfully and earned some great reviews from my clients which in turn helped in increasing my profile visibility online. And within some months, my job success rate started going high.

4.    I had a firm grasp on my understanding

I knew what I was working on. I knew where I needed to improve and what I needed to study. My communications with my clients were not as difficult anymore. I completed a market investigation of what other mental wellness authors are taking a shot at, what is the need of the hour, what are the standard rates different freelancers like me charge, and what are the limitations they have confronted. I prepared myself well according to the market demands and it helped a lot in making the most out of my business.
